Dentures, often referred to as false or artificial teeth, are a tooth replacement option for patients who are missing all or most of their teeth. Some of the most common causes of tooth loss include gum disease, tooth decay, aging, and facial injuries. In some cases, missing teeth are genetic.
Dentures make it easier to eat, chew, smile, laugh, and speak normally. They improve your facial structure and your appearance. Dentures may be used to replace a few teeth (partials) or all teeth (full/complete).
Dentures are suitable for individuals who have lost some or all of their teeth due to various reasons, such as decay, gum disease, or injury. They are a viable option for those seeking to restore their oral functionality and aesthetics.
There are several different types of dentures on the market today. At Peak Dental Group, we offer partial, complete, removable, and removable options. We will determine the best option for you based on your current dental condition and your personal goals for treatment.
For patients who are missing some, but not all, their teeth, we offer removable or fixed partial dentures.
These replace some missing teeth in the upper or lower arch, restoring natural look, feel, and functionality. They consist of a gum-colored acrylic base with false teeth and have at least two clips made of flexible pink plastic or metal that attach to neighboring teeth. This option is ideal for patients who do not qualify for implant-supported bridges.
These are designed to replace several missing teeth in a row using dental implants for support instead of neighboring teeth. Fixed partial dentures are suitable for patients who are missing three or more teeth in a row and who are healthy enough for surgery. They can only be removed by a dentist.
Full/complete dentures are recommended for patients who are missing all of their teeth in one arch or who have a few remaining teeth that need to be extracted. In most cases, we will do what we can to save any remaining natural teeth before moving forward with full dentures. However, once we exhaust all other options, full dentures may be necessary.
Finally, we offer fixed and removable implant dentures. Both of these options are held in place by dental implants and can be used on the upper or lower arch. In most cases, we use four implants, but we may use more or less depending on your current dental condition and your jaw size. Implant dentures offer more stability and functionality than traditional dentures. Fixed implant dentures can only be removed by a dentist, while removable implant dentures must be removed before bed and placed in a cleaning solution like traditional dentures so that your gums can rest.
The journey to getting dentures begins with an initial consultation. During this visit, our professional dentist will assess your oral health, discuss your needs and preferences, and determine the best type of dentures for you.
Accurate impressions and measurements of your mouth are taken to create a custom fit for your dentures. This step ensures that your dentures will fit comfortably and function properly.
Once your dentures are ready, you will try them on to check for fit and comfort. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure a perfect fit, so your dentures look and feel natural.
Regular follow-up appointments are essential to ensure your dentures remain comfortable and functional. Our dentist will make any needed adjustments and provide guidance on proper care and maintenance.
Dentures are a major investment. However, they can significantly improve your life. By taking the time to review some of the benefits of dentures, you can be confident in your decision to choose this as your tooth replacement solution.
One of the most common reasons that people choose to get dentures is because they want to improve their smile. When you’re missing several visible teeth, your confidence is impacted. However, dentures can resolve that issue. They are custom-made for your mouth, so they fit well and look great.
You’ve heard the saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it”. This holds true for bone density too. When you are chewing or speaking, your jawbone absorbs much of the force that moves through your teeth. If you are missing teeth, your jawbone will begin to deteriorate and resorb into your system. This causes your cheeks to sag because they no longer have any support.
However, dentures replace missing teeth, which allows the force from chewing and speaking to absorb into your jawbone like normal. It is important to note, though, that implant dentures offer the most benefit because they are implanted into the jawbone and act as tooth roots, stimulating the bone.
Your teeth are hard, but your gums are soft. When you are missing several teeth, you will likely experience pain when chewing, especially tough foods. You may find yourself chewing carefully or sticking to a soft food diet to avoid hurting your gums. However, dentures allow you to eat and chew like normal.
When you are missing one or more teeth, it’s harder to brush your teeth and easier for bacteria to settle into your gum pockets. This is especially true if your tooth loss is due to tooth decay. However, dentures prevent decay from getting into your gum pockets and attacking other tooth roots/areas of your mouth, preventing additional issues with your dental and overall health.
Every part of your mouth is involved when you are speaking- even your teeth. Therefore, if you are missing teeth, you may have difficulty pronouncing certain words. Dentures replace missing teeth, making it a lot easier to talk.
