Don’t Let Missing Teeth Define Your Life

What are Dentures?

Dentures, often referred to as false or artificial teeth, are a tooth replacement option for patients who are missing all or most of their teeth. Some of the most common causes of tooth loss include gum disease, tooth decay, aging, and facial injuries. In some cases, missing teeth are genetic.

Dentures make it easier to eat, chew, smile, laugh, and speak normally. They improve your facial structure and improve your appearance. Dentures may be used to replace a few teeth (partials) or all teeth (full/complete).

At Peak Dental Group in Calgary, we offer partial and full dentures. On average, dentures cost between $650 to $4,000. Most dental insurance policies will cover a portion of the cost. Our friendly office staff will work with your provider to determine coverage and you will be given a quote for your portion before you move forward with treatment. We want you to be fully informed, and not surprised by the bill at the end of treatment.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures are a major investment. However, they can significantly improve your life. By taking the time to review some of the benefits of dentures, you can be confident in your decision to choose this as your tooth replacement solution.

Improves Smile

One of the most common reasons that people choose to get dentures is because they want to improve their smile. When you’re missing several visible teeth, your confidence is impacted. However, dentures can resolve that issue. They are custom-made for your mouth, so they fit well and look great.

Reduces Bone Loss

You’ve heard the saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it”. This holds true for bone density too. When you are chewing or speaking, your jawbone absorbs much of the force that moves through your teeth. If you are missing teeth, your jawbone will begin to deteriorate and resorb into your system. This causes your cheeks to sag because they no longer have any support.

However, dentures replace missing teeth, which allows the force from chewing and speaking to absorb into your jawbone like normal. It is important to note though, implant dentures offer the most benefit because they are implanted into the jawbone and act as tooth roots, stimulating the bone.

Chew Painlessly

Your teeth are hard, but your gums are soft. When you are missing several teeth, you will likely experience pain when chewing, especially tough foods. You may find yourself chewing carefully or sticking to a soft food diet to avoid hurting your gums. However, dentures allow you to eat and chew like normal.

Reduces dental health issues

When you are missing one or more teeth, it’s harder to brush your teeth and easier for bacteria to settle into your gum pockets. This is especially true if your tooth loss is due to tooth decay. However, dentures prevent decay from getting into your gum pockets and attacking other tooth roots/areas of your mouth and prevent additional issues with your dental and overall health.

Improves speech

Every part of your mouth is involved when you are speaking- even your teeth. Therefore, if you are missing teeth, you may have difficulty pronouncing certain words. Dentures replace missing teeth, making it a lot easier to talk.

Types of Dentures

There are several different types of dentures on the market today. At Peak Dental Group, we offer partial or complete and removable or fixed. We will determine the best option for you based on your current dental condition and your personal goals for treatment.

PARTIAL DENTURES

For patients who are missing some, but not all, their teeth, we offer removable or fixed partial dentures.

Removable partials replace some missing teeth in your upper or lower arch to restore the natural look, feel, and functionality. They can be removed and replaced easily and can be easily removed or replaced.

They consist of a gum-colored acrylic base with false teeth attached. There are at least 2 clips attached to the base that will be secured to the neighboring teeth for support. The clips are made of flexible pink plastic or metal. This option is typically recommended for patients who do not qualify for an implant-supported bridge.

Fixed partial dentures, also referred to as implant-supported bridges, are designed to replace several missing teeth in a row. While traditional bridges rely on neighboring teeth for support, fixed partials rely on dental implants on each side of the gap. A fixed partial denture is an ideal solution for patients who are missing three or more teeth in a row and are healthy enough for surgery. Fixed partials can only be removed by a dentist.

Full/Complete Dentures

Full/complete dentures are recommended for patients who are missing all of their teeth in one arch or who have a few remaining teeth that need to be extracted. In most cases, we will do what we can to save any remaining natural teeth before moving forward with full dentures. However, once we exhaust all other options, full dentures may be necessary.

Typically, dentures are made of acrylic resin. They are supported by your gums and jawbone but are not as stable as your natural teeth or dental implants. One of the biggest disadvantages of traditional full dentures is that they are bulky and tend to slip around in the mouth. This causes many patients to develop a lisp.

IMPLANT DENTURES

Finally, we offer fixed and removable implant dentures. Both of these options are held in place by dental implants and can be used on the upper or lower arch. In most cases, we use four implants but may use more or less depending on your current dental condition and your jaw size.

Implant dentures offer more stability and functionality than traditional dentures. Fixed implant dentures can only be removed by a dentist, while removable implant dentures must be removed before bed and placed in a cleaning solution like traditional dentures so that your gums can rest.

Before and After

When you’re missing teeth, it’s easy to lose confidence and even stop socializing with your loved ones. Life in general is just harder when you’re missing teeth. However, dentures solve issues with eating, speaking, laughing, and smiling. We look forward to helping you get your confidence and your smile back.

Denture FAQs

At Peak Dental Group in Calgary, AB, we love our patients and want to help them understand dental procedures before undergoing them. We get a lot of questions regarding the various procedures, including tooth replacement solutions like dentures. Some of the most common questions we hear about dentures include:

How do I know I need dentures?
If you’re missing most or all of your teeth and struggling with tasks such as eating or speaking or you try to hide your smile, you may want to consider dentures. If you leave gaps in your teeth, your remaining natural teeth will shift and you may also experience pain and bone loss, which can make you look older and weaken the jaw and remaining teeth. There are several types of dentures to choose from, schedule your consultation today to discuss your options.
What are the different types of dentures?
At Peak Dental Group, we offer fixed and removable dentures. We also offer partial dentures for patients who are only missing a few teeth and full/complete dentures for those who are missing all of their teeth on one or both arches.
How long will dentures last?
The life expectancy of dentures varies- but the good news is, you are in control of many of them. The first variable is the quality of the denture. The second is your commitment to proper oral hygiene and health. If you have fixed dentures, you should be brushing and flossing daily. If you have removable dentures, you should be removing them at night to soak and clean your gums. With both types of dentures, you’ll need to be visiting the dentist every 6 months for a comprehensive exam and cleaning. Finally, it depends on the type of denture you get- immediate/temporary dentures typically only last for up to 8 weeks. Implant dentures, on the other hand, are designed to last much longer- up to a lifetime.
