What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a tooth replacement option consisting of three components: implant, abutment  and crown.
The implant is inserted into the jawbone and acts as a tooth root, stimulating the jawbone to keep it healthy, and supporting the prosthetic tooth. The abutment is the connector that holds the crown on the abutment. The crown is the prosthetic tooth. For patients who are missing more than one tooth, a partial or full denture can be attached to 2 or more dental implants.

Dental Bridge procedure

There are two types of implants: endosteal and periosteal. Endosteal implants are the most common- they are inserted into the jawbone. Periosteal implants, on the other hand, are designed for those who do not have adequate bone density. They are inserted into the gum, above the jawbone.

There are several benefits associated with dental implants, including:

Restores ability to chew and speak normally
Looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth
Improves self-esteem
Reduces stress on remaining natural teeth
Preserves jawbone density
Reduces appearance of aging
Easy to maintain
Lasts up to a lifetime with proper care

It is also important to note that there are a few disadvantages, including:

Prosthetic teeth will not whiten like natural teeth
Requires invasive surgery
Expensive- but the benefits outweigh the costs
Bone graft/sinus lift may be required to support the implant

Are you a good candidate for dental implants?

At Peak Dental Group, when determining whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implants, we consider several factors:

Your jawbone density- you must have adequate jawbone density to support the dental implants. If not, you must be healthy enough to undergo bone graft or sinus lift surgery.
Your oral health- you must be in good oral and overall health since this is a surgical procedure. If you have conditions such as gum disease, it must be treated prior to implant surgery.
Your habits- you must not use tobacco products or must be willing to give them up while you are healing from the surgery. You will also need to practice proper oral hygiene habits.

Dental Implants vs. Dentures

Dental Implants

Dentures

Permanent tooth replacement
Must be replaced/relined from time to time
Looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth
Functions like natural teeth, but does not look or feel like natural teeth
Inserted into jawbone, keeps bone healthy
Sits on top of gums, does not keep bone healthy
Brush and floss like normal
Removable dentures must be placed in denture solution; fixed dentures can be brushed/flossed like normal

Financing Options and Insurance Plans for Dental Implants

Some dental insurance plans will cover a portion of dental implants. Our friendly office staff will contact your provider to determine coverage. We will be able to provide you with a quote stating your portion at your consultation appointment. This will help you determine how you can work it into your budget. We accept a variety of payment options, including financing through PayBright by Affirm. We may also be able to structure your treatment so it fits your budget better.

Partial Missing Teeth vs. Full Missing Teeth Replacement Options

If you are missing at least one tooth and are interested in tooth replacement options, we have several at Peak Dental Group. Depending on your current dental health and your needs/goals, we may recommend single implants, All-on-4, or All-on-6.

Single Implants

A single-tooth implant is designed to replace one missing tooth. It consists of 3 parts: implant, abutment, and crown. The implant is inserted into the jawbone to serve as a base for the crown. The abutment is the attachment that holds the crown on the implant.

All-on-4

All-on-4 dental implants is designed to replace all of the teeth in an arch. This solution involved the placement of four implants: two in the back of the jaw at a 45° angle and two in the front, straight up and down. Then, instead of a single crown being placed on each one, we secure a denture in place. This is a permanent solution. The denture can only be removed by the dentist.

All-on-6

All-on-6 dental implants is also designed to replace all of the teeth in an arch. This is basically the same as All-on-4, only we use 6 implants, all straight up and down. Once the implants are in place, we attach a denture to them. This is also a permanent solution, only the dentist can remove the denture.

Implants at Peak Dental Group in Calgary, AB

The process of getting dental implants at Peak Dental Group takes a minimum of several months. In some cases, it can take up to a year or more.
We start by doing any necessary extractions or other procedures such as gum disease treatment, sinus lift, bone graft, or others. Once you heal from this- usually at least a few weeks and up to a few months.
Once you have healed from the preparation procedures, we will place the implant. We start by cutting into your gums. Then, we drill a small hole in your jawbone and insert the implant. The surgical site is stitched closed, and you will be given some time to heal and for the jawbone to fuse with the implant. This step also takes several weeks or more.

Next, we will cut into your gum again to expose the implant and attach the abutment. In most cases, we will attach a healing cap. However, depending on your condition, we may be able to attach the prosthetic tooth at this time.

You will be given pain medication and antibiotics while you are healing from the surgeries, as well as explicit aftercare instructions. This will help prevent implant failure. There are a few side effects, including:

Minor discomfort
Facial/gum swelling
Minor bleeding
Bruising on face/gums
Pain at surgical site

These are all minor and should resolve on their own. However, if they do not resolve within a few days or they worsen, you’ll need to come in and let us examine you to find out what is causing the problems.

Why Choose Peak Dental Group for Dental Implants?

Popular Dental Implant FAQs

If you are missing at least one tooth, you may be considering dental implants as a tooth replacement option. At Peak Dental Group in Calgary, we want you to understand your options, so we’re here to answer any questions you may have. Some of the most common questions we hear about dental implants include:

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are small titanium screws inserted into the jawbone that act as a replacement for the missing tooth root. Dental implants can be placed in the top or bottom jaw. Since titanium is biocompatible, the jawbone fuses with it, creating a stable base for an artificial tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth (single-tooth implant) or several teeth (dental bridge, partial denture, or complete denture).
Why choose dental implants?
The primary reason you should choose dental implants is that without stimulation from the tooth roots, your jawbone will deteriorate. This will cause your facial structure to sag, making you look older than you are. Plus, dental implants are comfortable and stable- they won’t shift around in your mouth like dentures- and they may last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance.
Are dental implants painful?
You will be given an anesthetic during the procedure, so you should not feel anything during surgery. However, you may experience some minor pain and discomfort as you heal. You should be able to control this with OTC pain relievers or the prescription pain reliever that you’re given. It should resolve on it’s own within a few days but if not, feel free to contact the office and come in so that we can find out what is going on.
What is the success rate of dental implants?
The success rate of dental implants is around 95%. Of course, this depends on your commitment to practicing proper oral hygiene and making sure to visit the dentist every 6 months for an exam and cleaning.
Who should get dental implants?
Dental implants are an appropriate tooth replacement option for patients who are missing one or more teeth due to tooth decay, trauma, disease, or genetics. The primary consideration is bone density. The dental team can determine if this is a viable option for you during your consultation.
Is there an age limit for dental implants?
Many times, our older patients are concerned that age may prevent them from being able to get dental implants. However, your oral and overall health is a bigger factor in your candidacy for dental implants than age. If you’re healthy enough for extractions, you should be healthy enough for dental implants.
