Root Canal IN Calgary, AB

Root Canal

Tooth pain, swelling, and persistent sensitivity are signs that the pulp inside your tooth is infected. Peak Dental Group offers treatment of root canal in Calgary, AB, for patients with infected, cracked, or severely decayed teeth. Emergency appointments are available, and same-day crown restoration can be completed in a single visit using CEREC technology.

We accept CDCP, follow the Alberta Dental Fee Guide, and provide a full cost breakdown before any treatment begins. Call 403-774-9604 to book your consultation.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is an endodontic procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue at the center of your tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria penetrate the pulp through deep decay, a fracture, or trauma, infection develops. Without treatment, the infection spreads to the surrounding bone and adjacent teeth, leaving extraction as the only option.

At Peak Dental Group, root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia, with same-day crown restoration available through CEREC technology. Most cases are completed in one to two appointments. Patients across Calgary receive their full root canal treatment and crown restoration in-house, with no referral to a specialist and no additional wait.

Who Needs a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is recommended when the pulp inside your tooth is infected, damaged, or at risk of spreading further.

Patients with Severe Tooth Pain

Problem: Persistent, throbbing tooth pain that worsens at night, does not resolve on its own, or radiates to the jaw and ear indicates pulp infection or nerve damage.

Solution: The infected pulp is removed at its source, eliminating the pain and sealing the tooth with a crown for full pain-free function.

Patients with Prolonged Sensitivity

Problem: Sensitivity to heat or cold that persists long after the stimulus is removed indicates compromised pulp tissue. A filling or desensitizing toothpaste will not resolve this condition.

Solution: Removing the damaged pulp tissue eliminates the sensitivity. After treatment and crown placement, the tooth can respond to temperature more comfortably.

Patients with a Cracked or Fractured Tooth

Problem: A cracked or fractured tooth can expose the inner pulp chamber to oral bacteria. Left untreated, the crack deepens, the infection spreads, and the tooth becomes irreparable.

Solution: Treatment clears the infection before it progresses. A crown is placed over the tooth to seal the crack, restore strength, and prevent further fracture.

Patients with a Dental Abscess

Problem: A visible pimple on the gum, facial swelling, or a persistent bad taste in the mouth indicates an abscess. An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth that will not resolve without clinical intervention.

Solution: The infection is drained, the source is removed, and the tooth is sealed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Patients with an active abscess require prompt treatment to prevent the infection from spreading to surrounding tissue and bone.

Patients Choosing to Avoid Extraction

Problem: A severely infected or damaged tooth leads many patients to consider extraction as the fastest solution. Extraction creates a gap in your arch, triggers bone loss at the site, and requires a replacement, such as a dental implant or bridge, to restore function.

Solution: Your natural tooth is preserved, the surrounding bone is supported, and the alignment of adjacent teeth is maintained, without the additional cost and procedures often required for tooth replacement.

The Root Canal Procedure at Peak Dental Group

Each stage of your root canal at Peak Dental Group follows a defined clinical sequence, from diagnosis to same-day crown placement.

Step 1: Examination and Digital X-rays

Your dentist examines the affected tooth and takes digital X-rays to assess the extent of infection and the anatomy of the root canals. This determines the scope of treatment required before any procedure begins.

Step 2: Local Anesthesia

The treatment area is fully numbed with local anesthesia. You remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Step 3: Pulp Removal

A small access opening is made in the crown of the tooth. Specialized instruments remove the infected pulp tissue from each root canal.

Step 4: Cleaning and Disinfection

Each canal is shaped and irrigated with an antibacterial solution to remove remaining bacteria and debris. This step helps prevent reinfection.

Step 5: Sealing

The canals are filled with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material, and sealed to prevent further bacterial entry into the tooth's interior.

Step 6: Crown Placement

A dental crown is placed over the treated tooth to restore its structure and protect it from fracture under biting force. At Peak Dental Group, same-day CEREC crowns are available, which can help complete your treatment in a single appointment.

Recovery Tips After Your Root Canal

Most patients return to their normal routine within one to two days. Follow these guidelines to support healing and protect your treated tooth.

  1. Use over-the-counter pain relief as directed by your dentist to manage mild soreness for the first 2 to 3 days.
  2. Avoid eating until the local anesthesia has fully worn off, then stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated side until your crown is fully settled.
  3. Continue brushing and flossing as normal, including around the treated tooth, to keep the surrounding gum tissue clean and reduce the risk of post-treatment infection.
  4. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 10-minute intervals during the first 24 to 48 hours to reduce any swelling in the gum tissue around the treated tooth.
  5. Contact Peak Dental Group directly at 403-774-9604 if you experience severe pain after 72 hours, increasing swelling after 48 hours, an uneven bite, or any discharge or fever. Our Peak Dental Group team is available Monday and Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for post-treatment concerns.

FAQs

How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals at Peak Dental Group are completed in one to two appointments. Complex cases involving multiple canals or severe infection may require a second visit. Your dentist confirms the expected number of appointments after the initial examination.
Is a crown always required after a root canal?
Back teeth that handle chewing pressure usually require a crown to prevent fracture of the treated tooth. Front teeth with minimal structural loss may not require a crown. Your dentist confirms what is needed after completing the procedure.
How long does a root canal last?
A root canal followed by a properly placed crown can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, regular professional check-ups, and the quality of the crown restoration. Some treated teeth remain functional for decades.
Does root canal treatment hurt?
Root canal treatment uses local anesthesia, so patients feel pressure rather than pain. Mild soreness for two to three days is normal and improves with basic pain relief. Most patients resume normal activities the next day.
